About mediation

Mediation is a way of helping people involved in arguments and conflict to overcome their disagreements by having support available to help them talk to the other person or people.

One of the simplest definitions of mediation is - ‘A neutral third party helping other people with a dispute to have a very difficult conversation.’

The disputants, not the mediator, decide the terms of the agreement.

Mediation aims to:

* change disputing behaviour;

* resolve conflict;

* make realistic,

* workable agreements;

* maintain parity between parties;

* Treat people fairly.

Mediation is:

* constructive;

* informal;

* staged (takes a step by step approach);

* facilitated by an impartial person;

* confidential;

* able to deal with a variety of issues;

* future focused;
